5 reasons to make working out a part of your life
I know what you’re thinking ….
How can a trip to the gym get anyone excited?
Several years ago, I was with you on this one. The thought of having to put on workout clothes, get in the car, drive to the gym, and find the motivation to use the machines and free weights while trying not to look weak and clumsy was paralyzing.
Most of the time I’d make up a lame excuse not to go. I didn’t want to deal with the hassle, not to mention having to see my reflection in the mirrors on every damn wall of the place — constant reminders of just how much I needed to be there.
I told myself there were other options — much more important ways to spend my time.
My self-talk was fired up, convincing me I could simply take a walk or dig in for a half hour of house cleaning to get my heart pumping and break a light sweat. I even convinced myself to set up a “home gym” to deter that nagging finger of guilt in my brain. I invested in a set of barbells and a hula hoop and cleared out a corner of the bedroom as a workout space.
I was on a roll! No need to expose myself to the embarrassment of attempting to exercise in a public gym. I was certain the uncomfortable experience would place me under the microscope of scrutiny from those who no doubt held irrational opinions of anyone lacking a toned, muscled physique and the mental fortitude to hit the benches every single day.
So I stayed home — in a safe place.
