Aside from the occasional ringing in my ears (damn tinnitus), on most days it seems like I’m living in a quiet void.
And I crave the sound of a human voice.
The lack of verbal communication is becoming much too common.
The reason behind this disturbing phenomenon is everywhere I look. Focused eyes are glued to hypnotic screens while expressionless faces offer evidence of a complete and total lack of interest in the outside world — or those who occupy it.
In quiet frustration, I watch people furiously tapping away with nimble fingers, sending urgent messages that, apparently, spoken words can no longer express.
And I wonder what’s so important that those thoughts can’t be shared with another person eyeball-to-eyeball.
Who knows, if more people actually took the time to make a phone call (gasp!) instead of zipping off a garbled collection of letters and symbols, a real live conversation may develop.
You remember what that was like — two or more people engaging in an exchange of words and sentences that leave a pleasant vibration of delightful resonance in the air.
But I suspect even if that anomaly did occur, the interchange would be brief and constantly interrupted by the nagging itch to check incoming text messages every twelve seconds.
It’s really a shame we’ve been trained to forego our natural human tendencies in deference to cold, impersonal options.
