At some point in our lives, we’re faced with the issue of dealing with our past mistakes.

There seem to be certain events and circumstances that languish in our memories, plaguing our thoughts with negativity, personal disappointment, and regret.

I get it. We’re human. We make mistakes.

Still, that knowledge offers little comfort, and isn’t enough to dispel the reality of a remorseful mindset.

Regrets come in many shapes and forms. Something we did or didn’t do. Something we said or shouldn’t have. Someone we hurt, who deserved better from us.

Those latent laments are visceral reminders of our human weaknesses.

And they can haunt us on a daily basis.

You probably have a good idea of some of your own regrets. In honest moments, you may feel them deeply — like a repentant stab at your heart.

So why can’t we stop ourselves from doing things we later regret? I think it’s because we fail to heed the warning signs. For example, dismissing that little voice in your head whispering, “I know I’ll regret this later.”

Yet choosing to forge ahead by making an unwise decision, spewing out a negligent remark, or utilizing an avoidance strategy to dismiss an obligation that falls squarely on your shoulders has consequences.
