The idea of willingly getting into shape can send most of us directly to the couch.

It’s not that we’re entirely adverse to the idea, because we know exercising is something we should be doing to stay healthy and live a longer, stronger life. Usually, the retreat to cozy comfort is supported by some weak excuse, like needing time to think about it.

On the surface, the concept of designing a fitness plan can seem complex, overwhelming — even unnatural. And thinking about where, when, and how to start can throw a wrench into most people’s non-committal mindset.

I’m getting better at recognizing the enemy and, more important, learning how to say no to temptation.

It’s definitely not easy to do. And each time I prevail, I mentally pat myself on the back, as if good has again triumphed over evil.

Fortunately, a friend of mine offered an eye-opening example that helps to keep me on track.
